Chef Daniel Boulud whips up a batch of "Brainy Brownies" from "The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals" (Running Press), with the author of the New York Times best-seller, Missy Chase Lapine. Lapine and Boulud tested recipes on kitchen and wait staff at Boulud's #1 ranked restaurant in New York earlier this week.
A BEST-SELLING CULINARY AND PUBLISHING PHENOMENON, "SNEAKY CHEF" MISSY CHASE LAPINE REVOLUTIONIZES FAMILY MEALTIME WITH INGENIOUS HEALTHY SUPERFOODS
First introduced in The Sneaky Chef - one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Bestselling Books of 2007- Lapine's hidden purees have transformed the way America's families cook and eat, leading to happier, healthier lives for both kids and adults
They said it couldn't be done, but author and food expert Missy Chase Lapine has managed to get millions of pint-sized picky eaters to love eating broccoli, cauliflower and spinach. Thanks to Lapine's groundbreaking best-seller, The Sneaky Chef, parents, schools and even hospitals across the country are learning to "sneak" nutrient-rich fruit and vegetable purees into the kids foods love best.
The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals (Running Press; $17.95, paperback) was recently named as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Bestselling Books of 2007. The book was an instant New York Times bestseller in April 2007 and has remained on the Times' bestseller list for over 12 weeks! To date, The Sneaky Chef has sold more than 165,000 copies.
The result is a an entirely new way of thinking about food, and a technique that has earned Lapine legions of fans among moms, kids and food and health professionals from celebrated chef Daniel Boulud to New York Times health columnist Jane Brody.
Recently Lapine has entered into several prestigious collaborations, including Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork Presbyterian, which has become the first hospital in the country to offer Sneaky Chef recipes on its menu for young patients, staff and guests.
In response to the first book's overwhelming success, Running Press will release The Sneaky Chef for Men: How to Cheat on Your Man in the Kitchen on April 1, 2008. And Lapine's ingenious approach has already inspired a whole new category in the culinary book trade.
The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue
Lapine's healthy, delicious recipes couldn't come at a better time: Two new studies, published in the December 6, 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, warn that obesity in children today is likely to result in a significant increase in coronary heart disease among adults in the near future.
Fortunately, a September 2007 report in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association noted that when kids improve their eating habits (including lowering their intake of saturated fats and increasing their consumption of fruits, berries, vegetables and whole grains), they can lower their risk of heart disease later in life.
Lapine's books-and the foods, housewares and other Sneaky Chef products currently in development-enable home cooks to "sneak" healthy purees into a wide variety of popular dishes, from snacks to main courses to desserts, with utterly delicious results. Consider:
- Brainy Brownies-with hidden spinach and blueberries that work double to cut half the fat
- Masterful Mac 'n' Cheese-featuring hidden cauliflower and zucchini purée as the sneaky secret ingredients
- Magic Meatballs- tricked-out with eight hidden veggies, including all the dreaded green ones
- Mystery Mashed Potatoes-smashed with protein-rich white beans
- Extra Sneaky Chocolate Banana Breakfast Ice Cream-made extra-rich with avocado!
