The following is a list of sneaky foods used most commonly in the 5 Sneaky Chef books, plus the favorite yummy foods to hide them in. Keep as many of these as possible on hand and it will be easy to make Sneaky Chef recipes a regular part of your family’s daily life. Please keep in mind that you can easily find organic versions of most of these items:
 
Produce:

  • Baby spinach
  • Zucchini, fresh
  • Broccoli, fresh
  • Sweet potatoes (or yams)
  • Cauliflower, fresh
  • Fresh berries, in season
  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Onions
  • Potatoes, russet
  • Lemons

 

Meats/Fish:

  • Beef, lean ground
  • Turkey, lean ground
  • Hot dogs (no nitrates)
  • Fish fillets, tilapia or flounder
  • Chicken, drumsticks and skinless, boneless tenders

 

Cereals/flour:

  • Wheat germ, unsweetened
  • Oat bran
  • Rolled oats, old-fashioned, not quick cooking
  • Cereal, high fiber flakes
  • Cereal, brown rice
  • Flour, whole wheat (stone ground)
  • Flour, white (unbleached)
  • Cornmeal

 

Rice/pasta:

  • Brown rice
  • Macaroni and cheese, boxed (preferably without artificial colors)
  • Whole wheat pasta, elbows and ziti
  • Wonton wrappers
  • Lasagna noodles, “ no boil”

 

Bread:

  • Bread, whole wheat
  • Tortillas, whole wheat, flour
  • Tortillas, corn
  • Bread crumbs, whole wheat
  • Whole wheat pita bread, pocketless
  • Bagels, whole wheat

 

Canned goods:

  • Garbanzo beans (“chickpeas” )
  • White beans, (“ butter beans,” navy, or cannellini)
  • Refried beans, low fat, vegetarian
  • Baked beans, vegetarian
  • Tomatoes, plum, whole
  • Sardines, in water, skinless and boneless
  • Tuna, in water (preferably chunk light”)
  • Tomato paste
  • Evaporated skim milk
  • Tomato soup, condensed

 

Jars/bottles:

  • Baby foods —  especially sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, zucchini, garden vegetables, prunes, plums, apricots, blueberries, spinach and broccoli.
  • Pomegranate juice
  • Salsa
  • Applesauce
  • Ranch dressing (no MSG)
  • Ketchup
  • Pasta sauce

 

Frozen Foods:

  • Blueberries, frozen (preferably without added syrup or sweeteners)
  • Strawberries, frozen (preferably without added syrup or sweeteners)
  • Cherries, frozen, pitted (preferably without added syrup or sweeteners)
  • Green peas, sweet
  • Corn, yellow, off cob
  • Edamame (soybeans in shell)

 

Nuts/Oils:

  • Almonds, blanched and slivered
  • Extra virgin olive oil, cold pressed
  • Canola oil, cold pressed
  • Cooking oil, spray

 

Tea/cocoa:

  • Cocoa, unsweetened
  • Green tea, decaffeinated

 

Desserts:

  • Chocolate chips, semisweet
  • Sprinkles, multicolored
  • Jell-O, not pre-made
  • Gelatin, unflavored
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Whipped cream, spray can
  • Frozen yogurt, low fat

 

Dairy/eggs:

  • Powdered sugar

  • Jam, no sugar added

  • Mini food processor, 3-cup capacity
